On Writing Introductory Paragraphs

The introduction is tricky. Done correctly, it sets up your topic and provides you with a clear roadmap of how to attack the rest of your paper; however, without proper and careful reflection and planning, your intro (or lack thereof) can stop you cold.

Before you write, make sure you understand the assignment and your writing task. Brainstorm ideas and get some initial thoughts down on paper. If you are writing about literature, have the book or story at hand; if you are writing from articles, have them printed out and refer to them.

Remember, your opening sets the tone, so grab the reader's attention.
